THE TEAM

There is often the misconception that a Parish is run by the Vicar.   Nothing could be further from the truth.   The Vicar's role is just one of many and here in Par we have a good team of lay people who take on a variety of ministries.

THE CHURCHWARDENS

Micky Mitchell

" I really enjoy the challenge of being a Churchwarden.   I am following in my grandfather's footsteps as he was churchwarden for over 20 years in Boscastle, North Cornwall.   Until recently I was an active Guider with a Brownie Pack and was also a Trainer and Commissioner, but I have now come out of uniform.   My other interests include cross-stitch, with a club that meets every week in our church room, although not all are church members.   I also enjoy reading and walking.   I am a member of the church choir and also belong to the Kernow Singing Circle.   This is a group of Guiders and ex-Guiders who meet once a month, again using our church room as a meeting place.   We are from all parts of the county and sing together purely because we enjoy it."

Jill Hore

Jill Hore is the daughter of a Cornish farmer, and a lifelong committed Christian.  She is married to Chris, who is a classic car enthusiast (especially T.Rs.), and he enjoys both driving and restoring them.   They have two grown-up daughters.

"I have been a churchwarden in Par for many years, and can be seen, week by week, in and around the Parish, working on behalf of the PCC.  I am now also the Treasurer for the PCC.

Along with my colleague I am the Bishop's eyes and ears in the parish.   I have developed trust and respect from the church congregations and parishioners.   I normally worship at the Good Shepherd Church, but try to worship at a weekday service within the 'group' once a week, in order to achieve some 'prayer time'.  (Sunday worship for a churchwarden can be full of distractions.)

Being a trustee of the Bishop Gott Memorial Hall brings me into contact with the groups that use the hall. We currently have Mums and Toddlers, Rainbows and Brownies, a Junior Church and Little Lambs Sunday Group, an Art Club and an embroidery group, a young persons karate club, a coffee bar and fortnightly bingo sessions.  Occasional use is made by holding bazaars and fêtes, birthday parties, the Par Old Cornwall Society, various groups holding meetings and for parliamentary elections.  We truly have a Parish Community Hall.

I am a member of the Par Old Cornwall Society and also give support to Churches Together in Par and the local branch of Cancer Research UK.   Further afield, I serve on the St Austell Deanery Synod and the Truro Diocesan Synod.

I work part-time as a bank clerk and to relax on my days off (?) I enjoy gardening and walking.”

THE P.C.C. SECRETARY

Julia Bartlett

" I grew up going to church every Sunday but lapsed when I got married.  I started going to church on a regular basis in 1996 and soon got involved in Parish life.    In September 1998 I became PCC Secretary for the Parish, bringing my
training as a secretary, on leaving school, to good use. I have 3 children who take an active part in Junior Church, to which I am leader."

All of the above regularly advise the Vicar and help to maintain our prime purpose - to carry the Good News of Jesus Christ to all the parish, and not just to those who worship with us regularly.

Whilst the above could be referred to as the 'Official Team', that is, people with specific responsibilities and authority, there are countless other members of our church who use their talents in a variety of ways whose ministry is equally valued.

THE SACRISTANS

At St. Mary's the sacristan is Jean Clark,  a mother of four grown up children and a Grandmother of six.
"I have been the sacristan at St Mary's Church for almost 20  years and  I am also a member of our choir.
My job is to prepare the church for all the various services. I love what I do, and to serve my God and his church."

At the Good Shepherd the sacristan is Pamela Cocking.  She became sacristan in 2001 and says that she is highly privileged to hold this position of caring for the vestments and vessels for worship at the Good Shepherd.  She is committed to her work, not only at the altar but also as a flower arranger and brass cleaner.  Pam and her husband, Jim (who is now retired but loves fishing in the bay), have two children and one granddaughter.  They are well known faces around the district having lived in the area all their lives. Between them, they do a lot of work behind the scenes to keep the Church of the Good Shepherd and the Gott Hall, tidy, clean and safe places to visit.

Whilst no one is indispensable, the work of the sacristans is greatly appreciated, for as in so many cases, it is the large amount of work which is 'unseen' that ensures that the dignity of worship is maintained at all times to the highest possible standards.
